1. Describe Reynie Reynie is very smart and nice he keeps thinking about all of the Possibilities.
2. On page five, it states that Reynie looked for solitude and freedom from persecution. What does this mean? Use evidence from the text to support your answers. It means that is the only place where Reynie could be in peace from the others and so he doesn't want to get beaten up so he goes into the Library where only he goes so he kind of escapes that.
3. Why would Reynie break his pencil in half for someone that he didn't even know? Because he was nice and he didn't her to miss the test and because he compromised and Dealt with the situation.
4. On page 17, it states that Reynie, "felt the weight of loneliness upon him." Why? What happened, use evidence to support your answers. He felt that again he was an oddball and that he was alone and that he thought no one would be like him that he was the only one.
5. Is cheating ever ok? How and why did Reynie resist the temptation? No and he knew that cheating was wrong and what would miss Perumal think.
6. Why are rules made? Why are there so many rules in chapter one? They made so they answer on their own and to see who is the smartest of them all and there are so many rules because they want to see if they could follow instructions and if they can do them correctly and if they remember them.

1. Reynie says he doesn't like television. Do you believe him? Why or why not? Yes because to be as smart as Reynie you can't watch that much or even at all television because television can rot your brain.
2. Why is it important for this team to work together? It is important because you can learn more about them and learn what their special talents are and so you work better as a team.
3. At the beginning of the chapter Rhonda doesn't seem upset at all - why? Because she probably knew she wasn't going to get in because she of course cheated and the second thing is that she already past the tests.
4. Describe Kate and Sticky. Who do you think are the protagonist and antagonist of the story so far? Kate is the unafraid, fearless person and Sticky is a worried rat and hesitates the protagonist are Reynie, Sticky and Kate and so far there is no antagonist in the book.
1. What is the most important test the children passed in order to be selected? The most important test is the last one where you have to try to get to the brass bell in the identical room house.
2. How are they tested? They are tested by their brains their wits to see if they can find a shortcut if they find a pattern or if they retrace their steps perfectly.
3. Why doesn’t it seem to matter that all the children solve the problem in a different way? It doesn't matter because if they can get to where they are supposed to go they can re do it so then they past it so it doesn't really matter only as long as they get it.
4. What is narcolepsy? How does this affect Mr. Benedict? Narcolepsy is a disorder characterized by sudden and uncontrollable attacks of deep sleep and it affects him by if he has a strong emotion he will fall asleep in the most interesting times.
5, Where is Zambia? Find out two interesting facts about this place. Zambia is on the continent of Africa and over 10 million people live in Zambia and the leader is levi monioso.
6. Is Bembi a real language? Bembi is not a real language they speak English.
7. Why do you think Mr. Benedict wants this group of children for an important assignment? They want this group because these children are like the smartest people in the whole world and they can figure things out by themselves.
8. What does the word " vexed" mean and how is it used in these two chapters? Vexed means irritated and annoyed and it is used as a word to say how he/she is irritated.

What are the traits they possess that bring them together? They are nice and they are all orphans so they almost share the same lifestyle.
2. What causes discord among the team members? What cause them to not get along is when they have something as a secret or when they tell about their old life like what they had and what they could do so then the other kids would be jealous and sometimes Constance would get on people's nerves by being stubborn.
3. What in their backgrounds and family life is similar? What is dissimilar? They are similar by all of their parents have left them and they are different by some have known what happened to their parents so they knew them and some have never even met their parents.
4. How do the likenesses play a role in their assignment? It plays a role by they can understand each other and know what they are like so then they can work better as a team.

1. Why do you think that Mr. Benedict is telling the children to pay attention to what the Institute doesn't teach? He's telling them that because if they pay attention to the teaching they can't observe what the institute is trying to do and if they listen to the teaching they will get the sender's messages and be under his control.
2. What is Morse code? Who invented this communication system and what was it used for? The Morse code is a method of transmitting textual information as a seris on on-off lights. The person who invented the morse code is Samuel Morse and it is used for distress situations and when you need to send something important but is in disguise.
3. Mr. Benedict on page 119 states, "Whether you always agree is inconsequential,..." What does this mean? How does this fit into the definition of a team? It means whether you want to be a team or not and fits because to be a team you of course have arguments but that is being part of a team.
4. When Sticky tells about his background, he says that philanthropists began sending his parents money, what are philanthropists? It also says that Sticky was astonished and mortified - about what? Sticky is astonished and mortified because his parents didn't bother looking for him after a while so his parents didn't care about him anymore they just wanted to become rich and famous. A Philanthropists is someone who pays someone a great deal of money because the person is sad and concerned about the other person.
5. Constance had a breakthrough on page 124, describe this event. What happened is Kate called the morse code remorse code because everyone was in a sour mood so then Constance called Sticky George and Sticky said to stop calling him that and then Constance kept calling him that and then Sticky got really mad at Constance and then Constance left the yard.
6. Milligan has amnesia and wears disguises - why? Because he has amnesia because he got hit hard in the hard and he wears disguises because if those people come to look for him they won't realize him.
7. At the end of the chapter, Milligan couldn't look at the children - why? Because he was probably crying and he was thinking or trying to think about his parents that he couldn't remember.
8. What is the "unintended consequence" mentioned on page 135? The unintended consequence is the bad thing that is going to come in the future if they don't stop the Sender.
9. Describe the Sender. The Sender is someone who seems mysterious and quite clever because he sends out his messages to get more people on his side for the dark thing that is coming up.
10. Why was Reynie doubting his trust for Mr. Benedict? Because Mr. Benedict doesn't know that much about the Sender and the place that he is sending them to so he's making them feel like they are walking in to a trap blind.
11. What does the word "forged" mean on page 136? It means can he come to a conclusion about trusting Mr. Benedict.
12. Again, why do you think that Constance is an important part of the team? Your answer should reflect change from the last time we discussed this. Constance is important because she isn't afraid to ask the tough questions and if the person doesn't give her an answer she get the answer the hard way to get better information about what they are up against.
13. Why is Mr. Benedict commonly found on the floor? He is on the floor because when his disorder makes him fall asleep he won't fall to the ground and hurt himself.
14. How could Constance we the key to the team's success? Because she can ask tough questions and get the answers so she can get valuable information about the sender.
15. On page 143, why is Reynie thanking Mr. Benedict? He is thanking Mr. Benedict because he gave them a chance to be known and to be proud of themselves for who they are.

1. How are you enjoying this book so far? What questions do you currently have about this book that you think will be answered as we continue with the book? Well my question is will Jackson and Jillson be a help or be a pain? Also is Jackson and Jillson named after Jack and Jill and if they are would that mean executives are named after fairy tale characters?
2. Who are the executives and what is their job? What's the difference between a messenger and an executive? An executive are the people who run the show they did their job as a messenger very good. The difference between a messenger and an executive is executives run the show they are former messengers and messengers send the senders messages to the kids around the world.
3. Describe Jackson and Jillson. What do you think their role is in this book? Jackson and Jillson are like twins they both are pushy they are both impatient and thier jobs are to make sure every kid at the institute.
4. On page 160 it states that Kate was, "trying to prove she didn't need anyone's help and this was easiest to believe when she was doing what she was good at." What do you think this means? This means that if she isn't doing something that she is good at it makes her look weak but if Kate is doing something that she is good at she looks more stronger and indestructible.
5. The end of the chapter ends with a cliff-hanger. What is a cliff-hanger and why it important? A cliff-hanger is when the book or chapter ends with a mystery and it is important because it makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens.
Traps and Nonsense
6. Why do you think there was a trap disguised with a plant on top? Do you think this will be important later in the book? What is that called when an author gives you clues as to what is going to occur further into the book? There was plant on top because there is probably something very secret or very important that they don't want anybody or anything to see what it is. It will be important later in the book because they might find clues that will lead them to that spot and when you get there you know what to do. When the author gives you clues to what is going to happen next it is called foreshadowing.
7. Who are the helpers? The Helpers are people who fix things that are broken, clean up the floor and people that tend to a persons needs so they are basically janitors.
8. On page 166, the phrase "Whatever floats your boat," is an idiom. What is an idiom and what does this phrase mean? An idiom is a form of expression and the phrase means whatever you want to do.
9. What do you think about the Institute having no rules? How is this statement contradicted? I think that that is a good idea because if you want to send messages I think you should send the messages first to the people with the more relaxed mind. this statement is contradicted because you have to be in bed by ten o-clock which is a rule and another example is to always stick to the paths which is a another rule.
10. What is a free market? Why do they have to memorize a chant about the free market? A free market is a market that can sell anything it wants to with little restrictions. They have to memorize a chant because that might be a message from the sender.

1. On page 174 it states that the new kids always felt "conspicuous,"what does this word mean? Conspicuous means easily seen or noticed.
2. What are the "recruiters" and "Institute scouts" that they are referring to? Recruiters are people who work for the institute that kidnapped children and bring them there and institute scouts are what people call the recruiters.
3. What clues are mentioned in the book that might suggest that the new arrivals might have been kidnapped? Use text evidence in your answer. The book said that the children are sleepy so they could have taken medicine and they looked sleepy even though they just took a bath and was headed toward a new school.
4. Describe Mr. Curtain Mr. Curtain hates children, he is rude and is rude to children he is exactly opposite of Mr. Benedict.
5. Could Mr. Curtain and Mr. Benedict be the same person? They could be because they dress the same and look the same but the only difference between the two is their manners.
6. Why would everything be backwards at the institute? What might their reasons for this be? Because children don't look at things backward and some reasons are one because backwards is sometimes more confusing and another reason is these children aren't that smart because if they are coming here to learn so they might have trouble reading regular so some kids might not know how to read backwards.
7. What does the word "sasquatch" mean that is mentioned on page 179? Sasquatch is like a bigfoot and bigfoot is pretty dumb so in this case sasquatch means dumb or stupid.
8. What is a cryptic message and why would this be important? A cryptic message is a message that is hard to understand the real point is hidden. This is important because if you are in a secret mission and you have to send a message it has to be secret.
9. On page 184 it states, "As is always the case with a society, some arguing remained to be done." Is this true and why might this be important to all societies? This is true and this important because if you argue you can come up with different ideas and assumptions.
10. What is "gemini" and why is this word important to this chapter? A Gemini is the sign for a twin and this important because the chapter is called beware the Gemini and the Gemini would be Mr. Curtain so beware him.

1. Why do you think that no mirrors can be found at the Institute? No mirrors can be found because a lot of things there might look good or spell out something good so if you look in a mirror you might see it and tell everyone and then all of the children will be against you.
2. Find the idiom on page 188 and explain what it means. The idiom is "A stitch in time saves nine" and this idiom means if you do it now it will work in the long run.
3. What do you think of the statement, found on page 189, "Because it was impossible, in the end, to protect yourself from anything - no matter how hard you tried - it was important to try as hard as you could to protect yourself from everything." What does it mean in the story and what does it mean in life? It means in the story be aware of your surroundings and in real life it means be careful of what you do and be aware.
4. Why would SQ say she was "astounded or astonished" when Sticky and Reynie had received perfect scores? Why would this upset Martina? She said that to Reynie and Sticky because no new student has ever a got a perfect score on every test before. This would upset Martina because she has been at school for a long time and she even doesn't pass every test and she over heard executives talk about it.
5. What lessons had the kids learned in this chapter? What would this chapter be named, "Lessons Learned?" The lessons the kids have learned the logical conclusion "in the end to protect yourself from anything no matter how hard you tried it was important to try as hard as you could to protect yourself from everything" and another lesson that they learned is that don't ask a older kid to help you because then you could get beat up by that older kid. The chapter would be named that because lessons in life you first have to learn here.
6. The Helpers "averted" their eyes and had a "constant show of deference," why and what does this mean? Because they can't show eye contact with you and they can't talk with you but they can talk to you when you ask them a question. It means the dodged your eyes and was stumbling trying not to so he or she was tempted.
7. Why do you think that Mr. Curtain often was looking toward the bridge and off into the distance? Mr. Curtain was doing that maybe because he suspects something over there or that's the place where nobody bothers him.
8. On page 201 it says that the corridor erupted into a "cacophony," what does this mean? It means a loud and different mixtures of sound.
9. Why wouldn't the students want to go to the Waiting Room? Use text evidence to support your answer. Students wouldn't want to go to the waiting room because a guy was trying to make excuses to try and not go to the waiting room and one girl said that it was a terrible place to be at.

1. What does the simile "his eyelids felt heavy as anvils" mean? It means his eyelids were dropping and it was very hard for him to keep them up.
2. On page 210, Jackson stated, "You can say whatever you like when you have permission, right now no one has permission." What is he referring to? He is referring to that no one raised their hands and asked to have permission to speak. he also means that to have permission you have to ask to have permission.
3. On page 211, Sticky could feel the "malice," what does this mean? It means he was ready to hurt someone really bad.
4. Why is this chapter called Logical Conclusions and Miscalculations? The chapter is called this because they were making fun of the logical conclusions and they thought that Martina was some what nice but they didn't think she would pull a stunt to get them in trouble. It also this because of all of the logical conclusions made no sense to them and miscaculations is that they didn't understand about the logical conclusions.
5. How does fruit fit in with the discussion of taxes, war, health, the justice system.....? It fits in because the teacher is saying the government is bad like a poison apple and an apple is a fruit.
6. The symbol poison apples, poison worms refers to what? It refers that the poison apple is the bad government and the poison worms are the bad people inside of the government
7. Reynie looked at the literal meaning of being poisoned, was he wrong? Explain your reasoning. He was wrong because they weren't thinking that the sender is sending out his messages at stronger rate.
8. On page 216, it states that, "Most of us will simple feel irritable and confused." Have you heard this before? Where and what were they referring to? They are referring to the news reporter they heard on the T.V. at the house where Mr. Benedict is at.
9. Mr. Benedict told the children that their love for the truth will protect them, what does this mean? It means their love for not lying will protect them by the other people know that they are trustworthy so they won't pay attention to them that much so then they will be able to get away with things that other kids could never get away with.
10. Why can Constance hear the Messenger's voice? She can hear the messengers voice because she has a sensitive mind more sensitive then the others.
11. Explain the response the children got from the mainland on page 219 It means time is short before the messanger sends out his messages at full power so to get the information needed become what you have never done before which is lying or in this case cheating.

1. Why was Reynie jealous? Reynie was jealous because he didn't get on the messenger list even though he really thought he would.
2. On page 236, it says that Mr. Curtain rolled his chair almost "imperceptibly", what does this mean? It means to move at a super fast pace or at a really fast pace and it would be impossible to catch him and hard to keep up with him.
3. "If you don't trust them, keep them close." What does this mean and why would Reynie say this statement? It means if you don't trust them hang around him or her and see if they can really become trusted and he would say this because so Reynie and his friends wouldn't be suspicious.
4. What is a sense of "deja vu?" (page 238) Deja vu is when you think you have been here or saw this place before.
5. "Control is always the key." What is this supposed to mean? It means if you control something you have the key to make yourself more powerful or to do whatever you want to do with it.

1. Why is this chapter called Of Families Lost and Found? It is called that because the kids are going to try and help everyone who was brainwashed to try and find their families.
2. On page 254, it states, "What has been lost may yet be found, Have hope." What does this message from the mainland mean? It means you can find the very secret information and to have faith in yourself.
3. Respond to Reynie's idea of what a family might be all about, "I have no experience, but well, is this what family is like? The feeling that everyone's connected, that with one piece missing the whole thing's broken?" He doesn't know a family but he is wondering is being in this group part of a family.
4. On page 257, it, "family is often born of blood, but it doesn't depend on blood." What does this mean? It means that blood is you real family but sometimes family can be you friends.
5. What was the cliff hanger in the chapter Of Families Lost and Found? The cliff hanger was maybe we don't have to lay hands on it, this was the cliff hanger because it made you want to read on so that you can find out what it means.
6. Why do you think that family is such an important theme that is woven in and out of almost each chapter? Because this book is mostly about kids losing family, having a lost family or even not having a family at all.
7. What does "Tactical Caciupi" mean and why would the author name this chapter that title? It means you are being sneaky around a cactus and it fits in because Sticky was being sneaky by looking into Kate's spyglass to see what Mr. Curtain writes in his book.
8. Why would Mr. Curtain say that one of his biggest accomplishments would be the invention of his tidal turbines? Explain what these are and how might they be used on the island. These are like wind turbines but underwater and they are used for energy on the island and for the senders messages.
9. What was Kate using her spy glass/kaleidoscope for? She was using it to look in Mr. Curtain's book to find out what he is up to.
10. Knowing Sticky's talents, what do you think he is being used for when it comes to the journal? He is used to look in the spyglass and memorize what he saw in me. Curtain's book.
11. On page 267, the first entry is read and one part states, "There is no such thing as perfect control. I have come to understand, however, that the illusion of perfect control can amount to the same thing." What does this mean and what implications might this have on the story? It means if you have someone confused to who is in control that might spread around and everyone will think you are in control so the people who can't remember who is in charge they will think Mr. Curtain is in charge and think of him as a role model and follow his lead.
12. How can you have an illusion of control? By keep telling people you don't know that you are in charge.
13. Explain "brainsweeping." Briansweeping is when you wipe out a certain memory.
14. Why aren't the special recruits every scared? Because when they were brianswept they couldn't remember where they are but after a while they just think that they were always here.
15. What do you think the "improvement" is that they are talking about on page 270? The improvement was on the water turbines to make them more powerful.
16. What do you think his message on page 272 means? It meant for people who doesn't know him can read it and then come to the institute.
Wednesday, March 14th Read Caught in the Act and The Waiting Room Answer the following questions and make sure that you have part of each question into each answer. Due Friday, March 16th
1. Why is this chapter called, "Caught in the Act?" It is called this because when Sticky was giving Constence the answer he was caught and then got sent to the waiting room for cheating.
2. On page 277 it says, "precipice." What does this mean and how is it used in the sentence? Prepice means a high elevation and it is used when he thinks about Sticky in the waiting room and telling Mr. Curtain everything and then he thinks about what would happen to him if that does happen.
3. Why were Reynie, Kate and Constance trying to climb the wall? They were trying to climb the wall to look in the Gym and see what goes on in there when it is locked.
4. Again, it mentions the "improvement." Any clues as to what this might be? It might be again improving the tidal turbines.
5. On page 282, the word "ominous" is used. What does this word mean and how is it used in the sentence? Ominous means doing something violent and it is used when the people in the gym were trying to get out.
6. Describe Sticky as he came out of the Waiting Room. Sticky was shaky, nervous, scared,angry and just ashamed for when hr talks to Mr. Curtain tomorrow he might spill everything.
7. Why wouldn't Sticky talk after he came out? He wouldn't talk because he was just to shaken up to think of anything.
8. List the main characters and what they have to offer to a "team." Why might this be important to the rest of the book? (Reynie, Constance, Kate and Sticky) Sticky can memorize everything he sees so when they look at something important Sticky could memorize it, Reynie is very smart he can also figure things out so when Mr. Benedict gives them a werid message he can figure it out, Kate is an outside the box thinker and a daredevil so when it comes to sneaking in she will be the first to volunteer and Constance is brave enough to ask the tough questions so when the have to ask someone about the institute Constance can be right up in thier faces.
9. What was the main idea for this chapter? Give two supporting details. The main idea for this chapter is what the waiting room does to you because none of the kids besides Sticky went in the waiting room and when they asked Sticky questions about the waiting room he gave them amazing details to what it was like spending time in the waiting room.
Friday, March 16th Read Punishments and Promotions and Half a Riddle Answer the following questions and make sure that you have part of each question into each answer. Due Monday, March 19th
1. What was the dilemma that Sticky was facing with Mr. Curtain? What would you have done? The problem was that Sticky was caught cheating so he was sent to the waiting room to meat with Mr. Curtain and I would have told a lie to him and blamed someone I didn't like at all on the island.
2. State Mr. Curtain's view on the idea of "control." His idea of control is to make people think they are off the hook and he saying if you don't trust someone keep them close.
3. Why do you think that Sticky got off the hook for cheating and Reynie got off the hook for lying? Because maybe the executives actually want the two of them to become messengers
4, On page 304 it states that Martina's face, "shone with malevolence," what does this mean and how does that apply to this sentence? It means she looks like she wants everyone to keep looking at her new executive costume because Martina was just made an executive.
5. Why would Martina be promoted to Executive? Give reasons and your thinking as to why. Martina was made an executive because she was useful and some reasons are that she never backs down from a fight and always goes her way which is good because then she would never doing it her way the way she wants it to be.
6. What does it mean when Mr. Curtain says that the "best way of dealing with those you don't trust is to keep them close." Reynie said this and now so has Mr. Curtain - what do you think this means for the both of them? It means if you can keep people you don't know a lot close you can then maybe realize what friends to make and which people you don't want to be friends with.
7. Why did Mr. Curtain make Sticky and Reynie messengers? He made them messengers because they have been doing so well on their test score and they are one of the smartest people in the whole institute.

1. At the beginning of the chapter, Reynie has a dream. What do you think the dream means? His dream means that if he was to be caught he would be sent to the waiting room and they would get Miss. Perumal.
2. On page 314, it states that Reynie and Sticky shook hands "resolutely," what does this mean and how does it fit into the sentence? It means that they shoke hands in relief and it fits in because they though that Mr. Curtain found out about what they are doing on the island or when they lied about Martina.
3. On page 315, Jackson refers to Sticky or George as "dimwitted," what does this mean and how does it fit into the sentence? It means how dumb or stupid you are and it fits in because Sticky asked about the classes and Jackson said you will of course still have them then he said i don't see how you got made messenger if thats how dimwitted you are.
4. Why couldn't the boys know the way to the Whispering Gallery? The boys couldn't know the way to the whrispering gallery because number one you have to be an executive and number two is if they know the way they might tell their friends and then everyone will be using the Whisperer.
5. Describe the Whispering Gallery. The Whispering Gallery is a place where you have the Whisperer but beside that and two stools there is nothing else that you can hurt people with because if you hurt people with it, it will hurt the Whisperer.
6. On page 317, it states that the Whispering Gallery is so "austere," what does this mean? This means so empty,deserterd, nothing there at all.
7. Again the idea of control comes up over and over, why? It comes up over and over again because Mr. Curtain always has some sort of control every where he goes so he brings it up.

1. Why do you think that Mr. Benedict is telling the children to pay attention to what the Institute doesn't teach? He's telling them that because if they pay attention to the teaching they can't observe what the institute is trying to do and if they listen to the teaching they will get the sender's messages and be under his control.
2. What is Morse code? Who invented this communication system and what was it used for? The Morse code is a method of transmitting textual information as a seris on on-off lights. The person who invented the morse code is Samuel Morse and it is used for distress situations and when you need to send something important but is in disguise.
3. Mr. Benedict on page 119 states, "Whether you always agree is inconsequential,..." What does this mean? How does this fit into the definition of a team? It means whether you want to be a team or not and fits because to be a team you of course have arguments but that is being part of a team.
4. When Sticky tells about his background, he says that philanthropists began sending his parents money, what are philanthropists? It also says that Sticky was astonished and mortified - about what? Sticky is astonished and mortified because his parents didn't bother looking for him after a while so his parents didn't care about him anymore they just wanted to become rich and famous. 2. Who are the executives and what is their job? What's the difference between a messenger and an executive? An executive are the people who run the show they did their job as a messenger very good. The difference between a messenger and an executive is executives run the show they are former messengers and messengers send the senders messages to the kids around the world.
3. Describe Jackson and Jillson. What do you think their role is in this book? Jackson and Jillson are like twins they both are pushy they are both impatient and thier jobs are to make sure every kid at the institute.
4. On page 160 it states that Kate was, "trying to prove she didn't need anyone's help and this was easiest to believe when she was doing what she was good at." What do you think this means? This means that if she isn't doing something that she is good at it makes her look weak but if Kate is doing something that she is good at she looks more stronger and indestructible.

What is that called when an author gives you clues as to what is going to occur further into the book? There was plant on top because there is probably something very secret or very important that they don't want anybody or anything to see what it is. It will be important later in the book because they might find clues that will lead them to that spot and when you get there you know what to do. When the author gives you clues to what is going to happen next it is called foreshadowing.
7. Who are the helpers? The Helpers are people who fix things that are broken, clean up the floor and people that tend to a persons needs so they are basically janitors.
8. On page 166, the phrase "Whatever floats your boat," is an idiom. What is an idiom and what does this phrase mean? An idiom is a form of expression and the phrase means whatever you want to do.
9. What do you think about the Institute having no rules? How is this statement contradicted? I think that that is a good idea because if you want to send messages I think you should send the messages first to the people with the more relaxed mind. this statement is contradicted because you have to be in bed by ten o-clock which is a rule and another example is to always stick to the paths which is a another rule.

The book said that the children are sleepy so they could have taken medicine and they looked sleepy even though they just took a bath and was headed toward a new school.

1. Why do you think that no mirrors can be found at the Institute? No mirrors can be found because a lot of things there might look good or spell out something good so if you look in a mirror you might see it and tell everyone and then all of the children will be against you.
2. Find the idiom on page 188 and explain what it means. The idiom is "A stitch in time saves nine" and this idiom means if you do it now it will work in the long run.

What do you think of the statement, found on page 189, "Because it was impossible, in the end, to protect yourself from anything - no matter how hard you tried - it was important to try as hard as you could to protect yourself from everything." What does it mean in the story and what does it mean in life? It means in the story be aware of your surroundings and in real life it means be careful of what you do and be aware.
4. Why would SQ say she was "astounded or astonished" when Sticky and Reynie had received perfect scores? Why would this upset Martina? She said that to Reynie and Sticky because no new student has ever a got a perfect score on every test before. This would upset Martina because she has been at school for a long time and she even doesn't pass every test and she over heard executives talk about it.
5. What lessons had the kids learned in this chapter? What would this chapter be named, "Lessons Learned?" The lessons the kids have learned the logical conclusion "in the end to protect yourself from anything no matter how hard you tried it was important to try as hard as you could to protect yourself from everything" and another lesson that they learned is that don't ask a older kid to help you because then you could get beat up by that older kid. The chapter would be named that because lessons in life you first have to learn here.

What is he referring to? He is referring to that no one raised their hands and asked to have permission to speak. he also means that to have permission you have to ask to have permission.

It means he was ready to hurt someone really bad.

The chapter is called this because they were making fun of the logical conclusions and they thought that Martina was some what nice but they didn't think she would pull a stunt to get them in trouble. These are like wind turbines but underwater and they are used for energy on the island and for the senders messages.

1. Why is this chapter called, "Caught in the Act?" It is called this because when Sticky was giving Constence the answer he was caught and then got sent to the waiting room for cheating.
2. On page 277 it says, "precipice." What does this mean and how is it used in the sentence? Prepice means a high elevation and it is used when he thinks about Sticky in the waiting room and telling Mr. Curtain everything and then he thinks about what would happen to him if that does happen.
3. Why were Reynie, Kate and Constance trying to climb the wall? They were trying to climb the wall to look in the Gym and see what goes on in there when it is locked.
4. Again, it mentions the "improvement." Any clues as to what this might be? It might be again improving the tidal turbines.
5. On page 282, the word "ominous" is used. What does this word mean and how is it used in the sentence? Ominous means doing something violent and it is used when the people in the gym were trying to get out.

1. What was the dilemma that Sticky was facing with Mr. Curtain? What would you have done? The problem was that Sticky was caught cheating so he was sent to the waiting room to meat with Mr. Curtain and I would have told a lie to him and blamed someone I didn't like at all on the island.
2. State Mr. Curtain's view on the idea of "control." His idea of control is to make people think they are off the hook and he saying if you don't trust someone keep them close.
3. Why do you think that Sticky got off the hook for cheating and Reynie got off the hook for lying? Because maybe the executives actually want the two of them to become messengers
4, On page 304 it states that Martina's face, "shone with malevolence," what does this mean and how does that apply to this sentence? It means she looks like she wants everyone to keep looking at her new executive costume because Martina was just made an executive.
5. Why would Martina be promoted to Executive? Give reasons and your thinking as to why. Martina was made an executive because she was useful and some reasons are that she never backs down from a fight and always goes her way which is good because then she would never doing it her way the way she wants it to be.
6. What does it mean when Mr. Curtain says that the "best way of dealing with those you don't trust is to keep them close." Reynie said this and now so has Mr. Curtain - what do you think this means for the both of them? It means if you can keep people you don't know a lot close you can then maybe realize what friends to make and which people you don't want to be friends with.

1. At the beginning of the chapter, Reynie has a dream. What do you think the dream means? His dream means that if he was to be caught he would be sent to the waiting room and they would get Miss. Perumal.
2. On page 314, it states that Reynie and Sticky shook hands "resolutely," what does this mean and how does it fit into the sentence? It means that they shoke hands in relief and it fits in because they though that Mr. Curtain found out about what they are doing on the island or when they lied about Martina.
3. On page 315, Jackson refers to Sticky or George as "dimwitted," what does this mean and how does it fit into the sentence? It means how dumb or stupid you are and it fits in because Sticky asked about the classes and Jackson said you will of course still have them then he said i don't see how you got made messenger if thats how dimwitted you are.
4. Why couldn't the boys know the way to the Whispering Gallery? The boys couldn't know the way to the whrispering gallery because number one you have to be an executive and number two is if they know the way they might tell their friends and then everyone will be using the Whisperer.
5. Describe the Whispering Gallery. The Whispering Gallery is a place where you have the Whisperer but beside that and two stools there is nothing else that you can hurt people with because if you hurt people with it, it will hurt the Whisperer.

The Whisperer is a machine that can read your thoughts and think about your thoughts and decide if it's the right answer to the question he asked you. The Whisperer can't go deeper in your m thoughts and your brian to see what the actual answer is it can only take thought that you think at that moment.
9. On page 319, when Renyie states that, "They go down easier, like candy rather than medicine." What is he talking about? He is talking about the Whisperer and when he whisper's to you it goes through mind easier like candy goes down easier than medicane.
10. On page 319 it refers to "inputting data," what is this? It is when you give your answer to the Whisperer so it hasthe necessary information.
11. On page 321, it states, "poison apples, poison worms," again - now what is this referring to? Why is this phrase repeated throughout the book? It is referring to one package amy things inside the package and it is repeated because it means one thing could hold a lot of things.
12. On the last page of The Whisperer" it ends with Sticky saying, "Not being wanted, not being wanted at all," what was the question? The question the Whisperer asked was what is your worst fear then Sticky said not being wanted, Not being wanted at all.
13. Why didn't Reynie want to sit and eat with the rest of the messengers? What excuse did he give the messenger? He didn't want to sit with the other messengers because he wanted to tell Kate and Constance about the Whisperer and his excuse was he was sick and his germs could spread around and make other people sick.
14. On page 333, when Constance says that Reynie is "on," what does this mean? This means that instead of the sender's voice she can hear Reynie's voice in her head.
15. How do we know that Mr. Curtain will be done with the Messengers after "the Improvement?" We know that because after all the messages are recorded from the messengers mr. Curtain could play the messages around the clock so he wouldn't need any more messages from the Whisperer so he wouldn't need Messengers.
16. What are the clues about the trap? The clues about the trap was there was a foul odor in the air and it was a large black door and it was in a place where only executive's are allowed to go in.

1. Why is this chapter called "Practice Makes Perfect?" It is called this because Mr. Curtain was writing down his post-articles about trusting him and parents to send their children to the institutes around the world.
2. Why would the government press releases be dated for the future? It would be dated for the future because Mr. curtain is planning on sending these to the newspaper once the improvement is complete and for him to get more children to fall under his control.
3. What does the article and page 346/347 mean? It means that he will be named the president of a group because of his machine and that everyone will listen to Mr. Curtain.
4. Why would Mr. Curtain want to create fear in everyone? He would want to create fear for everyone because that would bring people to his Whisperer to calm them down and make them feel better.
5. Why would Mr. Curtain want to put together an Amnesia Sanctuary? He would want to create this because then he would brainsweep more people and the more people under his control his chances to take over the world increase.
6. Why is this chapter called, "Know Thine Enemy?" It is called this because thine means know who is on your side so know that someone that is on your side is on the same island or place as you.
7. What is the "memory terminal?" Memory terminal is a place or hanger where they send out Whisperer parts to the other institutes.
8. On page 353, Reynie states, "But we are too late! Much, much too late," what is he referring to? He is referring to all of the Whisperer parts are being sent out so that means the improvement has begun.
9. Who was the "recruiter" staring up at the window at night? The recruiter who was starring up at the window was Milligan.
10. Why would he send the message to hurry? Because they might get caught or since the improvement begun they might be running out of time.
11. Why was Milligan on the island? Milligan was on the island because he was sent to get them and bring them back so they could be safer.
12. Why wouldn't the kids follow Milligan? They wouldn't follow because they need to at least try to stop Mr. Curtain and his machine and if they didn't stop him the voice would be at full power soon and what would happen to Constance then.

1. What is Reynie's plan that he refers to on page 364? His plan is to disable the Whisperer but he doesn't know how to disable it.
2. Why was Reynie so afraid of "betraying?" He is so afraid because the Whisperer is so strong he feels empty inside even with his friends and would want to forget everything and keep going to the Whisperer.
3. Why was Reynie doubting himself? He was doubting himself because he feels he won't be able to hold off the Whisperer.
4. Why was Reynie sending Mr. Benedict a message? He was sending Mr.Benedict a message because he felt like he needed some help to hold off the Whisperer.
